Living Solefully:: day 4 Pumpkins!

4 Oct

Just had to include a pic of the foster pup because he's so darn cute!

I know it’s time to get out the fallish decorations when I have to put on my fall/winter coat to take the pooch out to “do his business!”  So as I walk down the side-walk I see pumpkins, mums, pumpkins, fall wreaths, more pumpkins.  So as I look around I’m the only house on the street not decked out.  My mantel and living room are still decked out in my seaside, beach mode.  My urns in the front of the house are still looking pretty good. ((I think that’s because I replanted them in July.))  But I am ready for the change over… Here’s my inspiration.  I’ll post my changes here in a day or so.

How Do You Celebrate?

7 Feb

I love Valentine’s Day! I’m not sure if I like it because it’s something fun after that post holiday blues have set in. Or I like it because it’s the day after my birthday. But I think the concept is fun.  No I’m not into the roses delivered to work thing, or the Kay jeweler heart-shaped necklaces. Not that there is anything wrong with that.  ((If you do receive any of those things kudos to your significant other!)) But what I like is the kids side of Valentine’s Day.
I like hand-made Valentines and pretty cupcakes at the school parties. I like reading the words on the candy hearts. I like it that my daughters school sends home a note to dress in your “fancy” clothes on Valentine’s day.  It’s just sunshine and lightness or should I day hearts and pinkish, all day long!  Pink, Pretty and Fancy that should be a motto everyday! I mean who can’t help but have a spring in your step when you dress like that!
So this week I will put out some red candles with red-hot candy hearts in the glass holder, and I will string some red hearts on the mantel.  Why because not only does it makes my kids smile.  It makes me smile!
Don’t let the commercialism of the holiday make it stressful for you and your kids. Have fun with it. Remember what it’s like to be a kid on Valentines Day! So in the spirit of Valentine’s Day here are some quick and fun ideas for crafts and decorating on the cheap!

Or what about some of these easy Valentines?

One year I had a kids Valentine’s Party.  It was a Friday night, Feb 13th.  I had the kids decorate a “Valentine’s House”.  Just a gingerbread set that was never done around the holidays, that I got some extra red heart candy for.  I set up a card making area.  It was a blast!  The kids had fun and the mom’s and dad’s drank, ate and were Merry!

My little one’s decorating our Valentine house!

Look at how proud our friends were of their cards!

I just had to include this pic!  So innocent and sweet.  Always Kiss your Valentine Good Night!  Enjoy this time.  Our children are only little once.

My Secret

3 Feb

Well this post may actually be shorter than what I previously wrote.  I accidentally deleted my post right before publishing Grrrr…

But anyway I wanted to share with all of you something about me.  Something that looms on the second floor of my home.  No it’s not haunted, although it is a historic home, so it could be, although I’ve never noticed anything.  But climb the stairs to the second floor and you’ll see the scariest room in our house… My office.  It’s a crazy place.  Oh yea I can make it look nicey nice when company comes.  I can cram crap into the closet or shove stuff into drawers lickety split.  But seriously who wants to live like that.  This room as been on “my honey do list” since we moved into our home 7 years ago.  Over the years it has been a make shift guest room, a playroom, a crafting/design studio, holiday wrapping center and a dumping ground of all things that can’t seem to find a home.  It’s literally a black hole, my tiny piece of chaos.  Wikipedia defines the term black hole a region of space in which the gravitational field is so powerful that nothing can escape after having fallen past the event horizon.   Hence my office!

But funny enough I can find what ever is needed in a snap!   So why am I telling you this?  Well it’s two-fold.  1.  I’d like to know I’m not alone in having this “secret”.  (Come on you all know you have a place like this… that corner, closet or  room that is for lack of a good term- gross, uninviting).  2.  I am hoping that by putting this out to the masses it will motivate me to actually do it!  Take the bull by the horns so to speak.  Make me accountable.  Designing a space is overwhelming.  For starter it’s an odd shaped room.  Very small.  Technically its a bedroom, because it has a closet.  But the room has two doors and literally is a pass through on our “L” shaped hallway.  I have been looking at other blogs for inspiration.  These decorating divas have some serious ideas!  I’m not sure how they do it, or find the time.  But I’m willing to put my best paint brush forward and give it a whirl.  So here’s what I find inspiring.

And then there’s this…

It’s not pretty!

Wow!  So there you have it.  My little black hole.  A small oasis of chaos admist my Main Street home.  Nothing like the pic’s above that’s for sure.  But I want to change that!  So I’m vowing to do this. I will create an artful, peaceful and functional space.  I will update you as I progress.  If you have suggestions or just want to let me know that you too have a little secret chaotic space- I’d love to hear about it!

and  P.S. to my hubby who is a blog subscriber…let’s get crackin! (love U)
