Meet Kim! Our featured Sole Momma

8 Jun

First half marathon. The Spirit of Pittsburgh 1/2 Marathon (1:53)

I just love talking to people who are health minded.  I like learning from them and acquiring new ideas.  Meet Kim, our featured Sole Momma!  Kim is a 40 something Sole Momma who eloquently balances a family, full-time career and marathon training!  Whoot Whoot!  Her blog This Runners Fuel is one of the reasons I decided to take on running some local 5K’s during my marathon recovery this spring.   I especially love her weekend motivational quotes and the recipe of the week that features some very cool vegetarian recipes.

So let’s welcome Kim and get to know her!

When did you first become interested in fitness and running?  I have always exercised to stay trim and ran on the treadmill, but about 2 years ago, I went vegetarian and found energy I hadn’t had in years. I started running on the road, which was a new thing for me. I enjoyed it and decided that I was going to challenge myself and run a local 5K.
One month later, I ran the 5K and surprisingly, won first place in my age group. I ran another one month later and within 3 months was running my first half marathon. It’s addicting.

Kim and her biggest cheering section, hubby Rich and daughter Madison.

What was the biggest challenge of training for your first marathon? Anything you would do differently?  By far the biggest challenge for me was finding enough time to fit in all those miles. Between working full-time, putting healthy meals on the table and devoting enough time to my husband and daughter, I felt a little unsure of how I would approach such a rigorous training program. There were a lot of 4:30am wake ups, after work runs in the dark and on the weekends my social life definitely suffered, but I was determined to do this. If I could have done things differently, I would have kept up with my strength training and spent more time stretching. There just weren’t enough days in the week.

What are the most challenging and or rewarding parts of having fitness as an integral part of your life?  It’s hard for me to consider my attention to fitness a “challenge” in any way. I think that I would face more challenges if I weren’t so focused on my health. It’s all win-win to me. My body allows me to take on certain tasks and pleasures in life without feeling limited. The stamina I have obtained through physical exercise and proper diet is immeasurable, not to mention the mental release exercise brings to help carry me through my busy schedule with sanity.

On your blog you talk a lot about food and nutrition. What inspired you to become a vegetarian, and what advice would you give to someone who wants to try to move toward a Vegan diet?  I originally became vegetarian after researching current farming practices in the United States, but over the past couple of years, it has evolved more into an issue of health. Unfortunately for me, there is a family history of high cholesterol, heart disease and high blood pressure. Research shows that a vegetarian diet is one of the best ways to win the fight against these genes. Choosing a vegetarian or vegan diet is a very personal choice and I would never try to force it on anyone, but for those who are considering the switch, take it slowly. Don’t think about the foods you won’t be eating anymore. Instead, focus on a whole new world of foods out there waiting to be tasted and enjoyed! It’s pretty amazing!

What are you most coveted pair of shoes and why?   Hands down, my favorite shoes so far are my Asic Kayano 16’s!!! I love them. I had some hip problems last year and found out I was an over-pronator (who knew?) and someone recommended them since they were a stability shoe. The hip problem disappeared after running in them a few weeks and it’s never been back. They have taken me through some great races, and of course my first Marathon. I bought two pairs at once in January and each have about 200 miles on them, and quite frankly I am starting to panic (a little).

Is there anything else we should know about you and your blog! My blog has been another thing that has just made running and eating healthy so fun. Sharing my marathon training experience online with people made it so much easier and fun to tackle. I actually have a lot of regular readers who tell me how much they enjoy my posts. It’s rewarding. My advice for anyone who has considered a blog – Open your mouth (or start typing), someone out there is interested in what you have to say.

Some Summer Fav’s and a few T.T. Recipes!

6 Jun

I have to first apologize for my lack of posting on TT (tantalizing tuesday).  Like all mom’s I’ve gotten a bit overwhelmed with the last few weeks of school.  Running around like a chicken with my head cut off.  Dinners here have been grab and go, breakfast for dinner, or grilled, grilled and more grilled food.  Our microwave kicked the bucket.  I had it working for a while after beating the crap out of it.  Literally.  But now it’s hummed its last hmm.  Which puts us in two problematic areas.  1.  Menu planning.  I now have to not only have meals planned, but know the night before what I want to make so I can get the defrosting started.  Which lets just say, I like to menu plan and then decide daily what fits into the routine.  Planning that far ahead takes the mental strength of a saint.  2.  We are now contemplating all new appliances.  But you can;t have new appliances without new counter tops, new cabinets…you see where I’m headed.  So it’s been challenging.  But were surviving.  Just like Mary Ingalls did without a microwave, “in the olden days”…LOL!

But in terms of food I have started wracking my brain for poolside snacks and meals.  As I have shared in previous posts we belong to a pool club and we have already started to send countless hours there.  I need to have snacks that are portable and healthy.  The snack bar is great for a quick treat, but we can’t be ordering from their everyday can we? No.  So here are a few recipes and products I found that are going to help me get organized and feed the kids healthy foods all summer long.

First I found these awesome kid friendly Bento Boxes from Lap Top Lunches.  A mommy team created the perfect on the go snack and lunch container set.  It’s made in California and is BPA and Lead free and do not contain phthalates or PVC.  Awesome!   I really think these will be a hit with my kiddies.  Each child will have their own bento box, (color coded per child of course) with their preference of snacks packed inside.  This way there’s no crying over who got the last grape or ate two Go-Gerts.

Another fun thing about summer is my kiddies ask for dessert.  As a dietitian I usually do not do dessert every night.  But in the summer I tend to be a little more lax as they can run around outside with it, thus leaving the mess there as well.  This is an awesome product from Williams Sonoma, the Zoku Quick Pop Maker.  This fun freezer allows you to create your own customized frozen pops in about 7 minutes. This means wholesome fruit pops.   You can make them, saran wrap, but into a baggie or Tupperware and freeze for later use! Wouldn’t you be the coolest mom at the pool with these babies!

Lastly a few recipes!

A No Bake Cookie from Eating Well.com  A perfect addition to my bento boxes!

For mom and dad pool side… edamame and ginger dip.  Like humus but better!

What are some of your favorite beach or pool side treats!  Leave them in the comments.  I’m sure we’d all love some great ideas!

Tantalizing Tuesday is Back!

10 May

With the crazy spring season upon us even I…the menu planner, can get caught up in the hustle and bustle of kids sports, meetings, recitals and forget to take the time to plan.  Let’s face it it makes a huge difference in the functionality of your day if you have a plan.  It reduces stress and allows for more healthful food choices, not to mention saves money.  Because eating out and ordering food isn’t cheap!

So with that said here’s my menu for the week for May 9th

grapefruit and avocado salad pic via {i village}

m. pink grapefruit and avocado salad

tu. cinnamon chicken with raita

Meet Jenn our featured Sole Momma

13 Apr
I am very excited to be writing a feature blog post today!  It’s called “Sole Mommas“.  What is a “Sole Momma” you ask?  A Sole Momma is a mom, wife, daughter or friend who finds the time to bring health and wellness into their lives while juggling life’s daily challenges.  I wanted to share these incredible woman with all of you and let you gain some motivation and inspiration.  As we all know it’s not easy fitting time for yourself into the mix and these woman do it with grace and style!

Her family and cheering squad at Trek Triathlon in Mt. Snow, Vermont. Jenn finished in the top three of her age group!

Meet Jenn! Jennifer Mc Donnell is a 39-year-old personal trainer and mom of three from Portland Oregon.  What I have learned about Jenn is that fitness is a family affair and a true passion shared by her husband as well.  She enjoys skiing and hiking with her family as well as kicking some butt as a boot camp class instructor.  Thanks to Jenn for being our first Sole Momma and sharing your story!

What is your best or most memorable workout?  I would have to say that my participation in the Hood to Coast relay this past summer remains in my mind as one of my most memorable workouts. A team of 12 runners against 197 miles of road and trail starting at 7,000 feet up Mt. Hood and ending at the Pacific Ocean. Being in a smelly van with six of your friends, running for over 24 hours, can make for a lot of memories! Last year our team finished in the top 100 out of over 1,000 teams. Not too shabby for our first go of it.  See the documentary here!  (Super Cool :)

Van #1 Hood to Coast. Team Gonna Fly Now. She can't wait to do it again this year!

Why did you became a personal trainer?  I have been a stay at home mom since my daughter Riley was born. I knew that if and when I returned to the workforce, I wanted to do something I had a passion for.  I love to workout and live a healthy lifestyle. (Some of my closest family and friends might even say I am a little obsessed.) So I thought what better of a way to help others than to try to get them excited about the benefits of being physically fit. Plus, I like having my own spending money for Nordstom and mani/pedi’s.

What is one snack or meal you can’t live without?  I am not a “foodie” and to top that, for the past 4 months I have been working with a coach who helps me with both my workouts and nutrition.  I eat most foods in their natural form so my diet is far from exciting. My treat is a nice glass of Oregon Pinot with some cheese and crackers…heaven!

A few of Jenn's boot camp clients. Smiling now but you should see them when she's finished!

What’s the toughest part about fitting fitness and training into your family schedule?  I will use this past weekend as an example of a typical day in the life of the McDonnell’s. Wake up to make breakfast for the family plus three kids who slept over, noon baseball game for my son, quick run to the store beforehand to get a gift card for a birthday party that afternoon, eldest daughter has a concert across town and I need to get in a run.  It’s never easy but I make a commitment to get it done and make sure that I coordinate it as well as I can with my husband.  He knows I can be a bit grouchy if I miss a workout so he’s pretty accommodating.

What are you training for now?  I like to stay busy so, I’m training for a few things.  I hope to do another century ride and triathlon but the biggest event would have to be my first marathon. I’ve signed up for the Portland Marathon in October.  The marathon, my husband and I all turn forty this year.  I still can’t believe I will run 26.2 miles….scary.

Jenn running the Helvatia Half Marathon.

What are your favorite pair of shoes?  live in Portland, Oregon. It rains…a lot! My favorite pair of shoes and by far the most worn are my black, Hunter rain boots. LOVE THEM! A close second has to be the new pair of New Balance, Minimus trail shoes I finally got my hands on. They are light and so comfy. I tend to wear them while I am training my clients. I hope to try them out on the trails as soon as they are broken in.

The Impatient Mommy

4 Apr

Do yo ever feel like time goes by sooo fast but yet sooo incredibly slow.  That’s how I’ve been feeling the last few weeks.  Since the marathon I’ve been nursing this IT Band injury.  I waited 2 weeks before going to see my ortho.  Once I did go- good news nothing wrong, no tears or major injury, bad news “over use”.  So now I’m onto phase two which is seeing my beloved chiropractor for ART and Graston therapy both of which are painful but seem to be working.  My first week of therapy I was told no high impact cardio…which I was partially compliant with.  I did sneak in a 3 mile run, “just to see” if I could do it.  I later had regrets, trying to roll on the foam roller to make sure I didn’t  rebuild any scar tissue.  This week after another grueling session of graston, I was told to try to run 3-4 miles at an easy pace.  The Dr said I was “doing better than expected!”  Yea A+++ for the non compliant student.

However I went for my 3-4 mile run yesterday and I feel totally defeated.  It was way harder than anticipated.  There were 20-30 mile an hour wind gusts.  At one point I actually felt like I was running but not going anywhere and to top it off my knee ached.  I’m not sure if that’s normal.  I mean it’s black and blue from the graston.  But I feel I’m losing my Mo-Jo.  I worked so hard to get to the start line of the Napa Valley Marathon 4 weeks ago and now am feeling like that was soooo far in the past.

A trainer once told me if you take 2 weeks off it takes double the amount of time to get it back.  Meaning if your off for 2 weeks expect it to take 4 weeks to get it back.  Crap- I’ve been down for 4 weeks now…8 weeks to get it back sucks.

I’m so impatient and feeling like I need a plan.  I’m floundering after this marathon.  So many people have said “enjoy this time off”.  Enjoy it? This is torture for an adrenaline junkie~ I hate it!  I loved having a plan, checking off my completed runs, having a sense of accomplishment that was all my own.  So today is the start of a new week, and the first Monday of the month.  I gave my trainers a challenge last week.  I said if I can’t run like I want to now then the new goal for the next 8 weeks is to look ripped!  Get the mommy bikini body I’ve always wanted.  So today I embark on a new type of training.  They have been working on a plan that will go into a spread sheet for my type A personality.  I will still be rehabbing the IT Band and strengthening the legs, all part of the 8 week plan.  I do have 2~ 1/2 marathons slated for the next 8 weeks, Long Branch Half and Covered Bridges in VT.  However for the next 8 weeks I’m going to focus on my eating {that should be entertaining} and more weight lifting.  The Impatient Mommy needed a fast fix….a new goal.   So Friday I had my weight taken, my % of body fat done, and all my measurements taken.  That was eye opening.  Today is the start of the 8 week plan.  Wish me luck!

Tantalizing Tuesdays~ Week 7

22 Mar

Wow! Yesterday was the first day of spring and guess what it snowed! Yup we cannot seem to catch a break here in the northeast.  But the tulips and daffodils are starting to make their triumphant debut through the ground so I guess spring is on its way.  So with the beginning of spring I’m ready to take the grill cover off, get some fresh herbs and try some new recipes.

Many people ask if I really make these recipes.  As I have said before I do plan for these 5- grocery shopping for them and then according to how my week goes I may them all or maybe two or three.  In that case I’ll move the two I didn’t make to the top of next weeks menu plan so I can utilize my groceries and prevent spoilage.  Last night we had the pork- it was super easy, the kids loved it even with a little sauce.  I served it with quinoa.  Happy (T. T.) Tantalizing Tuesday!  If you have a recipe you’d like me to feature please email me.

Let the post race healing begin!

14 Mar

Although I feel like a super hero still running on the high from my first marathon finish. ((that’s right 26.2 baby!)) sorry had to throw that in… I realize the need to be respectful of the race and the toll it took on my body.  I have to give my body time to rest, recover.  Let’s face it I was hobbling like a peg leg sailor for 3 days post race! Friday was my first day back to the gym. I walked 1 mile on the mill and worked out with my workout warrior friend and our trainer. Mostly upper body thank god! It’s been a true test of my wills not going for a run. I am jonsing to hit the mill or run outside on the bike path. It’s been 45-50 degrees perfect running weather. Saturday I did power walk for 5 miles which felt great! I told my hubby I was only going out for two miles and came back 5 later. True Deana style, always going for more.   But what is a good, smart recovery plan entail? Humm…well this is new to me…and like picking any training plan for your race.  Post race you can find just as many different opinions and plans.   Of course I have done my homework and have chosen a recovery plan.  But as a registered dietitian I am trying to now look at my food.  Of course when I was in Napa celebrating that was another story.  I allowed myself lot’s of goodies ((heck I deserved it, I ran 26.2 miles!)).  But now home, back to reality and actually I am craving some wholesome, nutritious food.  I need to give my body some nourishment to heal, just as I did pre-race to fuel.  Vitamin C is known for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of the body. It is necessary to form collagen, an important protein used to make skin, scar tissue, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Vitamin C is essential for the healing of wounds, and for the repair and maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth.  So with that said for the next few weeks I will ramp up my vitamin C intake!  Unfortunately the body does not make vitamin C or does it store it.  Therefore it is important for people to include plenty of vitamin C-containing foods in your daily diet.

So what are those foods?  Most fruits and vegetables contain some amount of vitamin C.  However the highest sources of vitamin C include green peppers, citrus fruits/ juices, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, turnip greens and other leafy greens, sweet and white potatoes, and cantaloupe just to name a few!  Some other excellent sources of natural vitamin C  are papaya, mango, watermelon, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, winter squash, red peppers, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries, and pineapples.

Phew!  That’s a lot of choices.  On the plane ride home I found these great smoothie recipes.  I tried this one over the weekend and L-O-V-E-D it!

pic via {real simple}

Strawberry-Flax Smoothie ~ from Real Simple

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 3/4 cup plain low-fat yogurt
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal

Directions

  1. Place the strawberries, yogurt, orange juice, honey, and flaxseed meal in a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth and frothy. Serves 1

It has some high vitamin C fruits and flaxseed with essential fatty acids! Whoo Hoo!  You can find other smoothie recipes in the February 2011 issue of Real Simple magazine. I want to try the Carrot Pineapple smoothie tomorrow!

So that’s how I’m recovering. How about you? What are your post race recovery rituals?

It takes a village!

11 Mar

So today as I stepped into the gym for the first time since completing my first marathon less than a week ago I was reminded of that old adage “It takes a village”.   No one can look back on a race and say wow- I did that all by myself  everyone gets a little help, encouragement somewhere.  Let me be clear… YES  you are the one out there…sweating out the miles…graveling with yourself… putting in the work.  But as I looked around me and the people who came up to me to ask “How was the race?”  I am reminded of how many people got me to that finish line.

Friends who run...even when tired!

The week after the marathon must be like what the week after the Oscars for the best actress winner feels like.  ((I can only speculate of course)).  They attend all the different TV shows, telling about how it was to make the movie, what it was like to go to the Oscars and then to win their award.  I’m having that same kind of week.  Wherever I go people who knew about the marathon ask me how was it…and they happily listen as I tell my tale of events on marathon day.    I feel the need to thank all the “people in my camp”.  So many friends and family rallied and were just as vested in the race as I was.  When I took on this challenge 5 months ago my good friends many of whom are seasoned runners brought me into their fold.  I got included on emails for weekly runs and started sharing my personal triumphs and failures in emails to many of them as training during this past winter in the NE proved to be the toughest thing I’ve ever done.

Workout warriors and running buddies!

Many friends ran with me over the course of the last 5 months!  My work out warrior friend is now in the midst of training for her first 1/2 and has become a consistent running buddy.  One friend even ran two- 20 milers in less than 1 week- to run my first 20 with me!  When we got to mile 16 she yelled “go Deana you can beat your 18 mile time at 20, go!”  One of my clients and now friend has become a running companion as well.  My trainer Kosta and owner from Catalyst Health and Fitness stayed open late one night help me get me my first 18 miler completed.  Winter was so brutal with over 60 inches of snow, ice and wind that running outside was either impossible or dangerous at times.  So I walked in the gym at 7:30 pm on a Thursday night and said “I will be here until closing-I have to do this 18 mile run, I need to see that number on the treadmill”.  My trainer, god love him… I was the last person in the gym that night.  He came and talked to me the last 30 minutes as my motivation was slowly waning.  As the clock striked 11pm I finished that dreaded 18 mile “dreadmill” run and he was right there!  As race day approached and my mileage got longer my IT band started acting up slightly.  Nikki another trainer and friend would stretch me  if she had time when I came to the gym to help me keep limber.  She was very conscious of my mileage and helping me work different muscle groups to allow for the best recovery.  The Monday night before I left for my trip some of my closest girlfriends and I gathered at a friend’s house to have a glass of wine, unwind and wish me good luck.  I felt super special!  Emails, text messages and Facebook well wishes flooded my in-box.  Sooo cool!  Each person adding a little piece to those last foot steps across the finish line.   I’m greatful for my MIL who flew up from Florida to take care of my three angelic children :) .  Both my SIL’s who helped to rally my children all weekend and make sure everyone had a great time while mommy and daddy were gone.

Go for it! Love Kosta & Nikki

When I arrived in Napa the most amazing bouquet of flowers were waiting in my room.   To my surprise and awe they were from my two trainers cheering me from afar.  And last but not least, my two friends who showed up in California to cheer me on!  CRAZY!  Literally they came from Connecticut to share in this event with me.  They stood in the rain on race day waiting for me to cross the line.  When I neared the corner my husband called out “Go DEANA!”  My friend started screaming my name and ran the length of the finishing shoot with me on the opposite side of the barrier.

Amazing friends who traveled across the country to cheer me on!

Amazing people, amazing experience.  VESTED~ everyone was invested in me.  ((It seems surreal and humbling)).  Nothing can top this.  But I am reminded that it does take a village, and I am so honored to share that village with all of you!
